A bit about why this is my favorite piece:

I know I’m not alone when I say that it feels like there’s always a million things going on upstairs, while also maintaining a delicate balance with the world around us. Even when life is busy with good things, it still feels like one pebble out of place, and you might disrupt the hard won harmony. I have so many incredible facets of my life. Things I feel huge gratitude and pride for that require a lot of attention and maintenance, and I DO feel so fortunate to do that work. And yet…even with that perspective I still have the deep knowing that I can’t maintain the balance forever.

I don’t have any solutions to offer, except to say that it’s ok if that’s what things need to be like for a while. It’s ok to observe that about your life and not pass judgement on it. As someone who is always looking for improvements to make, I’ve found a lot of peace in surrendering to the fact that things are just…delicate right now. Instead of observing that with the intention of changing it, I’m observing it to archive for future me to look back on. She will think “huh. there was that time when I had no idea how much I was holding. I thought I did, but I had no idea”.

And while I didn’t intend all of that when making this piece, that’s the experience I have with it now. I think that’s the really beautiful benefit of abstract art, it will meet you where you are.

Among the brushstrokes and textures, there’s a quiet conversation between color and space, inviting stillness into your living space. Art with themes of mindfulness and wellbeing can turn everyday moments into meditative reflections.

These pieces are made using scraps of old paintings and materials I save. They’re pure play and experimentation for me- two of my biggest inspirations right now. I could tinker with them for hours, just like making doll clothes when I was little.

I then sew the product of this meditative activity onto a piece of raw canvas, resulting in harmonious compositions with organic color palettes, like the ones seen here.
