Frequently Asked Questions
How does the ordering process work?
I do drops of new pieces periodically, which can be seen under the Wearables tab. To stay up to date on upcoming drops follow my @LD_Designed page on Instagram.
I am currently only accepting custom orders with a client’s own quilt. I am hoping to do a shop release in the Fall, but in the meantime please email me if you’re interested in a custom coat! The prices range from $300-$350 depending on length, if any mending is required that may increase the cost as well. You will pay half up front and the remainder plus shipping once done.
How do I utilize the Afterpay option?
Download the Afterpay app and create an account. Add your goods to the cart and select checkout. Select “continue with Afterpay”. You’ll enter your shipping and billing information as normal, then I t will automatically redirect you to Afterpay to complete your purchase.
*Please note that local pickup is not available when using Afterpay, but if you would still like that option please email me and I can refund you the shipping costs*
What’s the difference between the chore coat and cardigan
Cardigan style has a shawl collar and dropped shoulders. Chore coat has smaller collar and normal sleeves. Both styles run oversized. You can see pictures in the question below.
What are the different length options?

Standard- 25" ($325)
Mid-length- 36” ($350)
Cardigans Coat Lengths
Cropped- 25-26.5” ($300)
Standard- 30-31.5” ($325)
Mid-length- 35.5- 37” ($350)
I saw the disclaimer that the coats run about a full size larger than standard sizing, why is that?
Given that these are one of a kind quilts that can’t be remade, I would always rather you have the option to alter something smaller, since it can’t be made larger. Also, given that they’re vintage or antique, the fabric and threads are more fragile than a modern made coat. I don’t want you trying to squeeze into a coat that’s too fitted and end up damaging the fabric. Quilt coats look great when they’re a little roomy and allow you to layer underneath for ample coziness.
How do I wash my coat?
Only wash when needed to maintain the integrity of the vintage fabrics. Hand wash with a mild detergent (like Tide free and clear) and lay flat to dry on a towel. Be sure all detergent is rinsed thoroughly. Can be ironed on medium to high to regain structure. It might feel slightly stiff after washing, but it will soften and fluff back up with a few days wear.
What does the weight of the quilt mean?
A lightweight quilt will be thinner, either from the batting being made of a piece of fabric (think flannel) or wearing over time. It will provide as much warmth as a cardigan or light jacket. A medium weight quilt will be thicker, but still drapey and relaxed fitting. These are the best for quilt coats! It will provide as much warmth as a Patagonia or fleece jacket, but not as much as a heavy winter parka. A heavyweight quilt will have thick batting and thick outer fabrics. These are very warm, but they often provide a bulky or boxier look. They’re also a lot harder to sew with, so they’re never my first choice.
How do I measure to know how a garment would fit on me?
I provide the pit to pit measurements and length from the back of the neck to the bottom hem on each listing. Using an existing coat you have, lay it flat on the ground and measure from one armpit to the other. Using a fabric measuring tape is best, but any measurement will give you a better idea!
To compare the length with one of your own coats, measure from the base of the collar (that means not including the collar) to the bottom hem.
What if I want a specific length and fit that flatters me best?
I am happy to work with you to get a fit that you love when investing in a handmade garment! Email me to start the discussion.
What if I have a quilt of my own, can you make a coat from that?
Absolutely! I feel so honored any time I get to turn a family heirloom into a wearable garment. The minimum quilt size for a coat should be 60x72” or larger. For the chore coat style, I may be able to get away with a smaller quilt, but I would need more information to be sure. Pricing for this service starts at $300 and increases based on the length of the coat and how much, if any, mending is required.
Can you wash my quilt if it’s dirty or stained?
For an additional $125 I can wash your quilt, but I can’t make any guarantee about treatment of stains. When washing a vintage or antique quilt you always run the risk of color bleed, fabric damage, or stitches breaking, which is why I recommend it only if absolutely necessary. This price reflects a process that requires special detergent, 24-48 hours of repeated agitation, and additional space for properly drying the quilt.
What if I want to add something extra to my coat? Like a hood, buttons, an extra pocket, etc.
There will be an upcharge for order changes, but I’m absolutely willing to work with you on it!
Do you accept returns?
All sales are final. I work hard to provide ample information about sizing and garment measurements, as well as pictures of what it looks like on my own body (assuming it’s my size or larger) to give you the most confidence when buying. Please contact me at hello@ldisilvestroart.com or the contact page here on my website with any questions you would like answered before buying.
